Help Me Name a Character
I’d like to introduce you to that British officer over there, but I don’t know his name…because you haven’t named him yet! Most of the time, characters introduce themselves when they first whisper to me. Jesse Graham told me her name right off the bat, and little did I know it would be the source of Joe’s sweet nickname for her. I lost a file when I updated computers from my husband’s PC to my Mac, and had to recreate the opening scene of Exposed (not yet published). I remembered my protagonist’s first name was Leila, but I couldn’t remember her Read More
Words Matter
When my grandson, Tommy, was five, my daughter, Kristin, took him to buy school supplies for kindergarten. As they walked toward the store, he yelled out, “Look, Mom! They got all the A-holes out of Walmart!’ People walking to and from their cars cast disapproving glares her way. She stooped down and asked, “Tommy, what did you say?” “The A-holes. Tommy pointed to the new Walmart sign. “See? All the A-holes, where the Read More

Here they discussed the politics of the day, gathered news, and exchanged gossip. Tacked on the wall, posters and flyers announced proclamations, upcoming events and want ads. Beverages Patrons’ beverage choices were limited and did not include Starbucks varieties like Read More
“If Music Be the Food of Love…” Read On
Authors have a dirty little secret…we hear voices. All of the time. Our characters whisper, cajole, encourage, and inspire us as we write. I once posted on my Facebook page that friends shouldn’t be offended if they see me out walking and wave as they drive by and don’t get a return wave from me…I am probably writing. Now, if they see me talking to invisible people it might be more difficult to explain. Because I am a singer, I not only hear my characters’ voices, I hear their range, timbre, pitch, and melody. Disclaimer: I am not a professionally Read More
