Here’s a sneak peek at the opening scene of The Last Crossing:

Chapter One

June 1969

It was the whistle of the train at midnight that signaled another ghost.

Jesse Graham scrunched the pillow over her ears. Though she wasn’t quite awake yet, the tug in her gut recognized what was about to happen. And she wanted no part of it. Through the clothesline-clean smell of the pillowcase came a small voice singing “I’ve Been Working on the Railroad.”

She snuggled deeper into the covers, hugging the pillow tighter over her ears. The train whistled again.

“Oh crap.” She whipped the bedclothes back and sat up.

The noise that had awakened her carried a familiar, disturbing sense that seeped into her blood. She rubbed her arms and took in the serene décor, so in contrast to the chills she warded off.

Moonlight filtered in through the sheer curtains illuminating the beach-themed room. Starfish sprinkled the bedspread that crumpled along the white footboard. Seashells danced along the wallpaper border tucked just below the ceiling, and real seashells filled the clear glass lamp base beside her bed. The lamp she didn’t want to turn on.

Silence.

Damn. Not another ghost. She cocked her head.

Stillness.

She lay back down, pulling the sheet up over her ears. All she wanted to think about was her wedding. And Joe. Not ghostly visitations. Closing her eyes, she inhaled deeply, trying to stem her thrumming heartbeat. Only the rustle of leaves in the maple tree outside her window disturbed the night.

Breathe. Breathe.

She yawned and floated toward sleep.

Sleep, and the hope that what she’d heard was a dream.
