Progress on My One Little Word: Simplify

So I’ve taken some first steps toward my One Little Word: Simplify. If you missed last week’s post on how I chose my One Little Word, you can read it here. I wanted to share my progress with you.

I’m an “out of sight, out of mind” kind of person. Once I file things away, I forget about them.

That’s why my desk is often cluttered with piles. But I know exactly where everything is within those piles.

The same is true for digital files, which is why my Desktop and Download folders are.. shall we say… rich in content. That seemed a good place to start. So my on Jan. 1, my Desktop looked like this:

And now it looks like this:

No, I didn’t do a mass move of everything to the Trash folder. I moved each item to its appropriate folder under Documents, or I created a folder for items that didn’t fit in an established one. Now my challenge is to intentionally check my Documents folders for the files when I need them.

I’ve also been using my Passion Planner to create my 2020 Roadmap. It looks messy, but I’ve actually planted the seeds of a Business Plan for the year.

I just finished participating in Julie Hedlund’s 12 Days of Christmas for Writers and, while looking back on successes and disappointments from 2019, I brainstormed ideas for a route to follow for 2020. Here’s my “book cover” for our 12 Days challenge:

So much planning!! But I hope front loading the year with a clear plan will help me

Simplify

Have you decided on One Little Word for 2020? Please share your One Little Word in the Comments.

Why not create your own roadmap? If you’d like, you can also share any progress you’ve made or plans you’ve developed.

Or you can share what in your life you need to simplify. I’d love to hear from you.

I’ve been making folders specific to books or other topics for a long time. It sure does help. I know what you mean about “out of sight”…I forget, too. Good luck on simplifying.

I choose a word a month. January is organize. I know February’s because it’s a sister to January, structure. I am doing pretty well with my organizing. I might cry on your shoulder when I try to add structure to my life!

I’m interested to know what your February “structure” entails, Deb. I love organize for January because that’s how I like to start off the New Year, too. Cry away – I might join you LOL

Structure means developing some plan that is less spontaneous when it comes to getting things done. I procrastinate. I would like to say I get up, I do this, I have free time to read, I need time to write. Play with the cats. Do my chores. I am chaos. I know you have to allow for the unexpected. I think it would help if I bought a planner and actually read it!

Now I see what you mean. Yes, if I don’t have a planner, the day is over and I haven’t accomplished what I’d hoped to. Maybe that’s because I was on such a specific schedule when I taught school. I even knew what five minutes of the day I’d be able to use the restroom LOL. I don’t always accomplish everything I schedule every day in my planner, but even listing goals for the week or the month helps keep me focused. I, too, am a procrastinator. We should start a club 🙂
