When I Can’t Write, I Read, Watch, and Listen

THE CAVANAUGH HOUSE

Craving apple crisp and pumpkin spice anything? Must be fall and time for a good ghost story. You’re in luck. The Cavanaugh House is on sale for 99 cents through September 23. Order your copy today at Amazon.

On a brisk morning walk with Rich, this happened.

I blame the driver who waved us across the street but gave no indication of which way he was turning. Looking back to check if he was coming my way, I didn’t see the bump where the asphalt met the corner concrete gutter. Down I went.

Isn’t falling interesting? As it was happening, it felt simultaneously fast and slow-mo. I thought, “Oh crap, I’m falling,” as I saw the pavement coming closer. At the same time, it happened so fast, I couldn’t get my balance to avert the tumble.

I fell on my hands and knees, imbedding the asphalt pattern into my palms. The pain was so severe, I rolled to my side and hit the back of my head on the road.

Well played.

By the time I got to urgent care, I had a crescent-shaped blind spot in my left eye and was convinced I had a concussion and I’d broken my left wrist and right ribs. Thankfully, no concussion, and nothing was broken or fractured, but I could only move four fingers on my right hand. And I HURT.

So much for my plans for the day: 1) starting my weights to build upper body strength so I can lift my soon-to-be-born twin granddaughters, and 2) revising 25 pages of Love’s Destiny. But as my daddy used to say, “Every cloud has a silver lining.”

SHADOW AND BONE

Unable to type (except with the four fingers on my right hand) I climbed into bed and started watching the Shadow and Bone series on Netflix. I’d read the trilogy at my daughter Kate’s recommendation, and I was ready to see how the series worked. I binged the first four episodes.

It’s good.

I’d watched the trailer before I’d finished the trilogy and, I have to say, I doubted their casting Archie Renaux as Mal. But as I watched the series, I fell in love with him, too. I thought the rest of the cast was perfect, except for Genya. I liked Genya, but I’d pictured her with more delicate features.

I highly recommend both the trilogy and the series. I’m glad Kate gave me a heads-up that additional characters from the companion duology appear in the series, or I would have believed I’d slept through parts of the books.

THE MISTS OF AVALON

Not wanting to miss the beautiful summer weather while it lasted, I joined Rich on the deck after dinner (thank goodness he’s the cook in our family). I couldn’t hold a book to read. But again…silver lining. I’d been listening to The Mists of Avalon by Marion Zimmer Bradley on Audible—50 hours of listening pleasure. If you’re into Camelot and the Arthurian legend, this is a must. It consists of four novels: The Mistress of Magic, The High Queen, The King’s Stag, and The Prisoner in the Oak.

While I loved listening to it, I can’t lie, it dragged in some places—especially when it was in Guinevere’s POV. Bradley repeats herself often, but with four novels (or 50 hours of listening), readers need some reminders of previous events or characters. However, the history of Merlin, Arthur, and the Knights of the Round Table told from women’s POVs is fascinating. I have a brand-new perspective on Morgaine (Morgan le Fey).

And I believe I might be a Druid…

So, I’ve fallen behind in my revision schedule for Love’s Destiny, but I’ll catch up…well, with twin granddaughters on the way, I may not.

If you haven’t curled up with The Cavanaugh House yet, now is your chance to get it on sale for 99 cents! Pour that cup of tea, coffee, or glass of wine and start reading. Order your copy today at Amazon.

Having fallen earlier this year, I know what you’re going through–only I actually broke my wrist. Typing the old hunt-and-peck way is very slow. I hope you heal quickly. Meantime, enjoy the bingeing. I haven’t seen Shadow & Bone. I’ll have to check it out.

Oh no, Diane! I’m sorry to hear that you broke your wrist. How are you doing now? It sure puts the crimp in our writing, doesn’t it?? I enjoyed reading the Shadow and Bone trilogy. Hope you’re feeling better.
